About Us

Our Story

Café Polonez has been part of Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood for decades, and in 1981 it became our family’s story. When Irene and Zygmunt Zychla immigrated to Canada, Irene began working at Café Polonez. When the owner decided to sell, Irene and Zygmunt took a leap—using their life savings to buy the restaurant and keep it going.

What started as a bold decision grew into a lifelong commitment to preserving a place that already felt like home to so many.

More Than a Restaurant

Over the years, Café Polonez has become woven into people’s lives. Generations have come here as children and returned years later with their own kids—and even grandkids. Guests celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones with us, or simply stop in for a comforting meal that feels familiar.

Our food is rooted in tradition—classic Polish favourites that remind many guests of their mother’s or grandmother’s kitchen. Still family-run today, we continue the same menu and approach that brought people in from the beginning: handmade pierogi, comforting soups, and hearty homestyle dishes, served with the warmth that keeps people coming back.
